Tile of Spain’s 25th year at Coverings: a showcase for ceramic innovation

This year marked Tile of Spain’s 25th year at Coverings, and once again, the international brand representing 200 ceramic tile manufacturers belonging to the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers’ Association (ASCER), brought one of the largest foreign delegations to the show. In all, 42 Spanish ceramic and stone manufacturers showcased some of the most advanced ceramic tile technology and breathtaking design choices available. Each day guests enjoyed authentic Spanish hospitality complete with wine and tapas at the Spanish Pavilion but the real showstopper was the seemingly endless ceramic tile innovations displayed by the manufacturers.
Activities at the Spanish Pavilion included informative and educational seminars by Tile of Spain consultant Ryan Fasan, including one entitled ‘Renaissance Reprise.’ During his presentation, Ryan shared his thoughts on what’s trending in tile right now including the increasing popularity of ceramic tiles with texture and architectural interest.

‘Tile today is anything but flat or square, it’s all about adding depth to our environment,’ stated Fasan. ‘Just as TVs, movies and smartphones are moving into the 3D, so too are ceramics. Spanish tiles are offered in multiple thicknesses and formats to further deepen our ability to personalize the walls of our habitats. Contrasting layers of thin and thick, bent or warped and pulled or stretched formats create dynamic landscapes for light to play with and create a nuanced space that connects with the individual.’
The 3D trend was evident in Apavisa’s Archconcept, a new indoor/outdoor ceramic collection that brings unique volume to vertical surfaces, including hexagons with a raised core and square panels with raised and folded corners.
Fahrenheit is another 3D tile showcased at Coverings that resembles metal with an aged-effect and is available in a number of innovative, curved and bent forms.

La Platera featured Pixtile, a new concept that allows for limitless creativity and the technological ability to customize mosaics with any image, design or artwork. The company’s booth honored American heroes with this depiction of the famous photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.
