At Coverings 2026, we honored 25 outstanding projects that demonstrated spectacular craftsmanship and creativity in the use of tile and stone. This week we’re spotlighting the 2026 CID Award winner for Commercial Stone Installation.
Project: Utah State Capital, North Capital Building
Installer: KEPCO+
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
Our winner for Commercial Stone Installation. Utah State Capital features a 1960s Brutalist structure that couldn’t survive the Wasatch Front’s seismic demands, which has been replaced by something that will. Over 80,000 square feet of heavy cubic granite. A Greek Revival façade engineered to withstand the earth itself. Seventy percent of the stonework panelized off-site — some pieces 12 inches thick — shaving three months off the schedule without sacrificing a millimeter of precision. CNC foam models. Full-scale mock-ups. Italian-fabricated column capitals. Hand-finished stones chiseled down to 2 inches on all four sides. Traditional craftsmanship and modern façade engineering, fused into one monumental result. Completed Fall 2025 — and built to stand for the next hundred years.
