2024 CID Award Winner Spotlight: Commercial Ceramic Tile Design

1200 Promenade Central 4

At Coverings 2024, we honored 21 outstanding projects that demonstrated spectacular craftsmanship and creativity in the use of tile and stone. This week we’re spotlighting the 2024 CID Award winner for Commercial Ceramic Tile Design.

Project: 1200 Promenade Central
Designer: TVS
Location: Atlanta, Georgia, USA

The Promenade Central building was originally designed and built in 1981 as a regional headquarters for AT&T Longlines. Soon after, an Atlanta based developer proceeded to reposition this property as a modern class ‘A’ multi-tenant office building.

Promenade Central was converted functionally and aesthetically from a private corporate property to a generous visually open and accessible building. New building entries were established connecting interior amenities with grand landscaped social exterior settings to promote an indoor/outdoor environment.

To establish a signature new look and community presence, a large three-story steel trellis was introduced that overlays the primary Peachtree Street frontage integrating with two exterior terraces original to the building. Modern porcelain tile flooring in large format as well as smaller decorative patterns were utilized substantially throughout the renovation. Gauged porcelain wall panels that look like Corten steel were used in a monumental application on former concrete walls both inside and out of the grand lobby.

In combination with aluminum tube features, new lighting and artwork, the articulated design resulted in a grand social and business space experience fully visible from Peachtree Street.

From an engineering standpoint, the developer made a major investment to convert from a technology-dated single-tenant headquarters to a highly-efficient, cleaner, and streamlined multi-tenant facility.
