2024 Special Recognition CID Award Winner Spotlight: The House of Circular Terraces

The House of Circular Terraces 4

At Coverings 2024, we honored 21 outstanding projects that demonstrated spectacular craftsmanship and creativity in the use of tile and stone. This week we’re spotlighting the 2024 Special Recognition CID Award winner for Special Recognition: International.

Project: The House of Circular Terraces
Designer: Gail Ceramics
Location: Cotia, São Paulo, Brasil

With a cantilevered roof ingeniously angled to maximize sunlight penetration in winter and provide shade in summer, the House of Circular Terraces House embodies thoughtful architectural planning. The incorporation of black floor tiles not only adds aesthetic appeal but also enhances heat retention during colder months, thanks to the concrete floor’s substantial mass.

The wooden structure and window frames not only contribute to the house’s aesthetic charm but also play a role in storing carbon, aligning with eco-conscious principles. Notably, the house’s largely prefabricated construction minimizes waste, underscoring its commitment to environmental responsibility.

With this house being in Cotia, São Paulo, Brazil, the bedrooms are carefully crafted with integrated mosquito screens in the window frames, ensuring comfort and functionality. On warm days, it is desirable for cross ventilation to occur through the wooden casement window, bringing a fresh breeze to the beds. On colder days, when ventilation is desired in the room, the glass jalousie allows air exchange without crossing the bed area.

The ceramic flooring, exclusively provided by Gail Ceramics, showcases a perfect blend of style and durability. Utilizing traditional techniques and durable materials, the flooring ensures both visual appeal and long-lasting performance. This meticulous approach, coupled with a dedication to craftsmanship, reflects Gail Ceramics’ unwavering commitment to delivering superior-quality, sustainable living solutions.
